Game

Carol says her love is a cruise ship
in a harbourless world. She’s docked
two points for another maritime metaphor.
Keith’s love is America, the great
democratic experiment gone wrong.
His wife, Sarah, now and always
two steps ahead, sloshes brandy,
declares her vagina terra nullius.
Keith reminds her this is a game
of love not reproductive organs,
but Carol has already offered
to occupy Sarah’s land.
Keith is now caught
between two strands
of chauvinism. His eyes beg me
to untangle him. I could say it’s
just a game. Stop playing. Or
declare everyone winners
and losers. But you know
how competitive people get,
don’t you? Just listen
to the tantrums as I lift
& lay each one of them
back in their boxes.
